Tony’s a TV Star!

Where did you get that picture?

Photoworks Logo

Originally posted August 21, 2007

We have a picture hanging in the Deli that is of King Street in Leesburg before the streets were paved. It’s on loan from Photoworks. The picture is amazing. The old cars, the old storefronts. The change over the past 60 or so years is remarkable. Still the downtown area retains its charm from before.More...

Photoworks took pictures for an advertising campaign done by the Downtown Business Association. Neal took a picture of Tony and Chef Steve that was just wonderful. Tony hates having his picture taken and the results typically show that dislike. The picture that Neal took captured the playful impishness that is Tony. It was a delightful black and white photo of both Tony and Chef Steve.

If you’ve not seen the the picture of downtown Leesburg, stop by and check it out! We are so pleased that KD and Neal have loaned it to us.

Happy Independence Day

Originally posted July 4, 2007

The Annual Independence Day celebration will soon be underway at Ida Lee Park. The celebration goes on all day starting with a parade downtown at 10AM and ending with fireworks. Here’s information about <a title=”Idalee.org” href=”http://www.idalee.or

We’re taking the day off today to rest and stay at home with our dogs. The big dog hates fireworks so this is the worst day of the year for him. The “little” dog is far too cool to be frightened by fireworks but he shakes in sympathy for the big dog.

Be safe and have fun!

Celebrate Summer

Originally posted July 1 2007

It’s summertime! During the summer weekends, we get the most interesting people coming through the Deli visiting our area. I’ve had some of the most fun with our tourist guests and have enjoyed meeting them.More...

Last summer, when we were brand new to the Deli, we had a couple from England pop in for a bite. Well I had no idea what I was doing and I guess it showed. For some reason, they kept referencing the show Faulty Towers. I’m not sure that was a complement. But we laughed together and they promised to return if they ever came back across the pond.

Earlier this year, an English pound appeared in our cash drawer. I’m not really sure how it got there but, when a couple from England came in during the Flower and Garden Show, I gave it to them. I told the lady that I had something that belonged to the Queen and wondered if she would return it to her. She promised to do so. She came back later to tell me that she had thought about it and had decided to “put it in charity”. I thought that sounded like a better use for it.

The gentleman from France who did not know the word “napkin” was a bit of a challenge for me. But Tony knows a little French so it all worked out. He got his napkin and I kept a guest’s face clean.

The gentlemen who painted the courthouse clock tower and cleaned the Civil War (or should that be ‘war between the states’?) statue came in nearly every day. I believe they were from Italy and were craftsmen hired especially to do this work. It was hot! hot! hot! up there at the top of the court house. And the work took longer than expected because of the condition of the wood. They were really sweet and we were sad to see them go. But they did wonderful work.

I’m sure we’ll have other encounters as the time goes on. This is an area rich in history and wonder. We’ll always be glad to welcome people to our town and our country.

Otter Creek

Otter Creek SignOriginally posted: June 27, 2007

Otter Creek is a wonderful little shop that has eclectic items and fun stuff. They have beautiful antiques, furniture, lamps… it’s a place that you can spend hours just looking around to see what’s new.

We found the most beautiful blown glass ball for Tony’s mom. She lives in a condo and doesn’t have a lot of room. This beautiful blue glass is hanging in her window catching the morning sun. It was the perfect gift. Giving Tony’s mom a gift is not easy. She seems to have everything that she needs. So when Tony and I appeared at Otter Creek and Fred asked what we were looking for, we sort of shrugged… no idea what we wanted.

He had just the thing for people that didn’t know what they wanted. And she loves it.

If you don’t know what you want, or even if you do, stop by Otter Creek! It’s really neat. Oh, check out their website at www.ottercreekinc.com .

Leesburg Vintner

Originally posted June 27, 2007

It’s not a surprise, I guess that the Leesburg Vintner knows Tony and me by name… maybe we spend too much time there? We have this routine of going down to see Mike Carroll on Saturdays after we close. Usually we get there in time for the Saturday tasting.

The Vintner is located at the corner of King and Loudoun Street. They’ve been there for nearly 20 years… one of the longest, continuous running businesses in Downtown Leesburg. Their website http://www.leesburgvintner.com/ <!–more–>has pictures of the wines and the store. It gives information about their wines and such stuff. You can learn more at Mike’s Blog linked under our Blogroll to the right.

At one time in their history, the Leesburg Vintner had a sandwich counter as well as the cheese and pates they sell now. We heard from many people about a favorite sandwich that Mike used to make. So after we got to know Mike a bit more, we asked if we could get the recipe. On special Fridays, we run “The Vintner” special using Mike’s recipe. Honestly we don’t quite have the bread quite right but it is close. I think Mike approves. Seems like the people in downtown Leesburg are glad to have the sandwich back.

We’ve found that the Leesburg Vintner is an excellent place to go for all types of wines on any budget. Also there are some interesting beers, cheeses and pates. If you haven’t stopped in to meet Mike and Pete and the gang, you should make it a point to do so. Tell them we sent you!Carole
