Huey Lewis and The News

Originally posted May 11, 2008

We were delighted to have the opportunity to provide meals for Huey Lewis and the News and their crew during the Polo cup match at Morven Park on Saturday.

At first we thought we were going to provide food for the crew. We ended up feeding the band on Saturday (including their “after event” food) and for the crew. We had to do some scrambling but we did it.

Thanks to Lola Cookies, Market Street Coffee, Bz’s BBQ, and Morning Glory for the food and support. Also thanks to our employee, Brandon, who stayed the entire day (until 1 AM) to support the band and crew. Brandon has a lot of pictures; I’ll post them here if I can.

We were very impressed with the entire group. The band, down to every single person, were great. They were down-to-earth, easy-going, nice, nice, nice people. Huey Lewis stood for quite some time for picture after picture after picture. And even though we were the “help” (we sure looked cute in our little chef coats and pants), he was super nice and engaging. Nice guy. Nice group of people.

We learned a lot about “riders” and did a lot of running around. The officer’s at the gates at Morven knew us by name by the end of the night. Not sure that’s a good thing… :)

It was a real kick to be backstage (even just for the sound check). Brandon and Tony got a huge kick out of seeing the “Back to the Future” car up close and in person.

I really want one of those “All Access” passes for life. That was sweet to just be able to hold up a pass and go anywhere my heart pleased. I was too tired to totally exploit it. Oh and there was that work that needed to be done as well.

Is it snow yet?

Originally published February 8, 2007

Snow flakeThis winter has been so odd with the very cold days followed by the very hot days! I prefer warmer weather, but what can you expect in February?

If you are a snow lover, this surely has been a disappointing winter for you. Snow is nice if you can just sit and take it in. Shoveling the driveway always manages to damper the excitement of a snow storm.

Unless you’re in school…More...

Remember the excitement of waking to find snow on the ground? Or maybe you slept in your inside-out jammies trying to bring on the snow. Gathering around the radio or the TV to hear if your school is named on the “closed” list was the highlight of the morning. Mom was trying to keep us on track but we were determined to wait for the closure news. And when our school was announced, a mighty shout went up. We quickly pulled on our winter clothes and ran outside to play. We would play in the snow all day long!

Those were exciting days! Gone was the thought of homework or gym class or pop quizzes. It was all about the snow, sledding, and making the best snowball!
Funny how the image of a snow shovel changes it all for adults.

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! — just not too much…

Tony’s a TV Star!

Goodbye Chef Steve!

Originally posted November 25, 2007

We sadly bid goodbye and good luck to Chef Steve. Steve joined Court House Deli in June of 2006. He was a great asset and a wonderful teacher.

Steve taught us a lot of things about life and about cheffing… we’ll never forget his “wisdom.”

In addition to being a great chef, Steve is a drummer in two bands.

We have counted Steve as one of our friends previously and are honored to have both he and his wife, Maria, on that list.

MacArthur

Give...

Originally posted November 8, 2007

Unfortunately our little MacArthur was diagnosed with cancer in late August and we had to put him to sleep in October. He was a good little dog and a faithful playmate of Buddy for six years. We miss him.More...

MacArthur was so well taken care of by Dr. Sasseville at Leesburg Vet. The cancer was just too aggressive and we made the very difficult choice to let MacArthur live out his life in dignity. The chemo treatments and etc. would not have made a difference for him. MacArthur was a dog of great dignity. It was the best thing we could do for him.

We originally adopted MacArthur from the Animal Shelter in Waterford. We were looking for a dog to keep Buddy company when we were at work. Honestly we had a bigger dog in mind.

When we were looking at dogs, the gentleman at the pound kept coming back to MacArthur. (That wasn’t his name at the time.) “What about this dog?” he kept asking us. We finally asked why he was so interested in us taking that dog. It seems that MacArthur’s time was running out at the pound. So we took him.

At first, MacArthur didn’t want to have a thing to do with us. He had a family, who I think he loved, and they gave him up. He was pretty convinced that we were going to give him us as well. We didn’t. As time went on, he became more and more of our pack. He loved Buddy and his Man. (He tolerated me because I fed him.)

Buddy and MacArthur had their own games and rules that Buddy is trying to teach Elvis now. Elvis just doesn’t get the purpose of “chase” or “king of the deck” but Buddy will keep trying to teach him.

MacArthur loved chasing the squirrels and the groundhogs and loved skunks. One summer he was sprayed three times and actually caught a skunk. The skunk baths, which require standing soaking wet with something called “skunk off” rubbed into the fur, were not fun but perhaps worth it.

So MacArthur has moved to a farm in Western Massachusetts. We miss him here but know that he can breathe now and is no longer in pain.

Buddy

Originally posted September 8, 2007

This is Buddy. Buddy likes wine… and beer… But mostly he likes puppy chow.

Buddy is enjoying a nice light Pino Grigio wine that we got from the Leesburg Vintner. Before you get upset, the bottle was empty. Buddy just thinks he drinks wine.

Buddy is MacArthur’s “big brother.” We adopted Buddy in 2000. He was an only child for about a year and then we adopted MacArthur. Those two guys are the best of friends, most of the time. They work well together in ganging up on the squirrels, barking at the mailman and howling at firetrucks.

Buddy is a big baby. He is afraid of about any loud noise; hates the lawnmower and vacuum cleaner. Thunder and fireworks put him into a frenzy. Dr. Strickland had to prescribe anxiety pills for thunderstorms and the 4th of July.More...

Buddy is a momma’s boy. He likes to snuggle right up against me when he’s scared. He’ll leave The Man alone but he wants his momma. He also loves stuffed dog toys. He carries them around and plays with them until they quit squeaking. Once the squeaker is dead, the “baby” is usually torn apart by Buddy boy with the stuffing spread all over the house.

Buddy loves his Man as well. He thinks he a lap dog and will crawl right up on Tony’s lap whenever he can.

Can you say “spoiled”?

MacArthur

Originally posted September 8, 2007

This is our “little” dog, MacArthur. We rescued MacArthur from the pound in 2001. He was nearing the end of his time at the pound so we brought him home.

At first, he was not thrilled. He had been left at the pound by his first family and was convinced that we were going to break his heart as well. He spent a good bit of his first six months or year with us totally ignoring us.

He loves playing with his big “brother” Buddy. More...We adopted Buddy from the pound a year earlier.

But MacArthur wasn’t thrilled with the humans in the pack. MacArthur would figure out where we were going to sit for the evening and go into the other room. If we were watching TV, he would be in the dining room laying on the floor.
After some time, he began to realize that we were going to keep him. He went with us to the beach and we brought him home. I guess he figured that, if we were going to bother to bring him home, we would probably keep him.
MacArthur owns Tony. He tolerates me because I feed him. But he prefers Tony for most things. He hates squirrels and has been known to catch a few. He keeps the dreaded squirrel incursion beaten back in our yard.

Smashed Mushrooms Soup

Originally posted September 8, 2007

Chef Steve makes a “cream” of mushroom soup that doesn’t contain any cream. So how can it be “cream” of mushroom soup without cream?Apparently he purees the mushrooms. I guess “pureed” mushroom soup sounds better than “smashed” mushroom soup. I don’t care. It tastes very good and is low in fat!

Works for me.More...

Steve makes the soups at the Deli. They are all made from scratch and are fresh. He makes a cream of carrot, chicken and veggie, southwest chicken, split pea, gazpacho, and almost any classic soup you can name. All fresh.More...

We like the lightness and freshness of house-made soups. They don’t have the preservatives and unnecessary ingredients. Many of them are made with a vegetable broth base.

The Jailbreak Chili is so good it’s worth breaking out of jail for! We get a lot of compliments about the chili from people who reckon themselves as quite chili experts. I personally love the chili but won’t pretend that it’s good for my diet! All things in moderation!
